Influencing public policy, presented by Jacqueline Hall
An organisation that engages in effective public affairs will be aware of all regulatory activities impacting their business or sector, will anticipate such changes and will seek a constructive engagement with political and public parties to make their views known and represented in the development and implementation of policy and legislation. This course guides you through the principal stages involved in the legislative process and shows you how to successfully, and convincingly, influence the final outcome.

Working for yourself, presented by Carmel Doyle
Delivered by Carmel Doyle, herself a successful independent consultant, this course focuses on the key elements involved in building and developing a rewarding solo career. In particular it examines: The pros and cons of going it alone - what you can really expect, warts and all; the practicalities of self-employment; developing your business plan and identifying your key differentiator; putting good administration procedures into practice; pitching and proposals - selling yourself and doing it well; shortcuts to fee structures - all you need to know about the playing field and how to price yourself; networking to form friendships and partnerships, and to promote referrals.

Communicating in a crisis, presented by Padraig McKeon
Crisis planning has become mandatory for any organisation determined not to allow unexpected events damage or even destroy their reputation. Aimed at PR practitioners and advisors, particularly those working at account executive or PR assistant level, this practical and interactive workshop will eq uip you to handle a crisis situation or problem issue more effectively. Through the experience and expertise of the presenter you will gain an understanding and awareness of the key parameters you need, and learn what to do, what not to do and how to prepare and act.

This intensive one-day workshop will guide you through developing, planning and managing successful events of all types. The Media Contacts Directory has arrived!
The eagerly awaited PRII edition of the Irish Media Contacts Directory is hot off the presses and is now available for collection from our offices at 78 Merrion Square. To claim your copy you must first, however, be both a full member of the Institute and be paid-up for the membership year 2007-2008. Feel free to get in touch with us if you are unsure as to your status regarding either of these requirements.

As lost or misplaced copies of the Directory cannot be re-issued, we strongly recommend that you collect in person or by courier (with advance notice) if you are based in Dublin. If you cannot do so, please e-mail us at info@prii.ie.

The PRII annual conference takes place on Friday 09 May at the Conrad Hotel in Earlsfort Terrace, while the PR Awards for Excellence will be presented on Thursday 26 June at The Round Room at the Mansion House on Dawson Street. More details on both events will follow in due course.

Student corner

Graduation - final reminder
Graduation takes place on Saturday 19 January at O'Reilly Hall, UCD, Belfield. Graduates are asked to be on site by 11am - robes can be hired on the day from Phelan Conan - and guests must be seated by 12.15pm. If you have not yet returned your response form indicating whether or not you plan on attending please do so as soon as possible.

Careers Day
On Saturday 08 March the Institute will host a Careers Day for PRII student members. A panel of speakers will be on hand to offer insights and guidance on what it takes to make it in PR across a variety of industries and in both in-house and agency positions. Full details on this event, which is free to attend, will be issued to all students and colleges as soon as they become available.

PRCA AGM
The AGM of the PRCA will take place on Tuesday 29 January at Buswells Hotel in Molesworth Street at 6.30pm. All Association members are welcome to attend.

Radio show targets PR and event management professionals
Institute member Ellen Gunning has been signed up to host a new weekly radio programme for PR and event management practitioners, as well as for students studying in these fields. The programme, called Mediascope, will be broad cast on Dublin City fm (103.2) at lunch hour (1.30 - 2.00pm) each Tuesday from 08 January onwards.

In addition to being a fellow of the Institute, Ellen is a director of the Irish Academy of Public Relations and is also Chairperson (Ireland) of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA).

Due to this growth we are now seeking energetic and talented people - an experienced account manager as well as an account executive - to join our growing team of public relations and marketing professionals. 

Corporate Reputations was launched in early 2004 to advise organisations on building their reputation in the marketplace. We offer experienced strategic marketing and public relations services to our clients.

Corporate Reputations is a hard-working firm, passionate about its business. Since launch we have worked with leading firms and blue-chip clients across a number of sectors including corporate, pharmaceutical and healthcare, telecommunications and technology and government. Our clients include Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals (Ireland), UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, Merck Sharp & Dohme, Sustainable Energy Ireland, Rhodes D7, Point of Care, the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland, Whitebridge Capital Markets, and Saab.

The Account Manager should have a minimum of three to five years agency or agency and client experience in corporate and consumer public relations and be qualified to degree level as well as hold a relevant professional/or postgraduate qualification. Candidates should have a first-rate track record in developing and executing innovative communications campaigns, managing multiple projects, and multiple client management. Actively developing existing client relationships, leading a number of client accounts, providing client advice, and suggesting and putting in place important new initiatives for our clients will be a key part of the role. You will be expected to have established media relationships, in particular in the corporate, health, education and environment sectors. An attractive remuneration package will be offered, based on experience. The account manager will work closely with the managing director of Corporate Reputations.

The Account Executive should have a minimum of one year's agency experience, and be qualified to degree level or hold an equivalent and relevant marketing/public relations/journalism professional qualification. Excellent written and verbal communication skills will be required as well as the ability to work on multiple projects, meet deadlines, and to be an enthusiastic and hard-working team player. The account executive will support the senior team at Corporate Reputations, and there will be strong opportunities for career progression.
