This workshop aims to address the growing importance of advocacy by putting it into context and by demonstrating advocacy practices and techniques at their best. Sir Hugh Orde was appointed to the post of Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in May 2002, following a distinguished career in London with the Metropolitan Police Service. Since then he has overseen what has been described by The Oversight Commissioner as ‘unparalleled' policing change and the PSNI is now deemed to be the most accountable police service in the world.
In his quest to deliver a safer Northern Ireland, Sir Hugh has piloted a communications strategy centred on the principles of openness, transparency, engagement and conversation - a strategy that in early 2007 resulted in all the major political parties declaring their support for the North's policing and criminal justice system for the first time.
It is therefore the Institute's honour to welcome Sir Hugh to Dublin where he will present, on Thursday 10 April, an overview of this strategy, focusing in particular on the work carried out by the PSNI at local community level. In addition, he will outline how the organisation has earned the trust of policy makers and built a healthy and respected relationship with the Police Ombudsman.
Inevitably the PSNI remains a subject for debate but this event will demonstrate how its contribution to the changing landscape of Northern Ireland is beyond doubt.

Mark Cahalane elected Chairman of the PRCA
Mark Cahalane, Managing Director of Edelman, has been elected Chairman of the PRCA. Mark takes over the helm from Tim Kinsella, a director at MRPA KINMAN Communications, and will preside over the Association in 2008. Ann-Marie O'Sullivan, Managing Director, O'Sullivan PR, was re-elected to the Board and newly elected was Elevate Managing Director, Emma Kelly. The 2008 PRCA Board now comprises Mark, Emma, Ann-Marie, Tim, Roddy Guiney (WHPR), Ronnie Simpson (Simpson FTPR & PRCA Hon Treasurer), and Mary Crotty (Mary Crotty PR & PRCA Vice Chair). Eleanor Buckley joins the SFPA
The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) has announced the appointment of Eleanor Buckley as Communications Manager. Prior to joining the SFPA, Eleanor worked as a PR manager with H+A Marketing Group in Cork. She also managed corporate and consumer accounts for a number of years with PR agencies in Dublin including Murray Consultants, Elevate PR and Park Communications. Additionally, Eleanor worked on a number of chemical, manufacturing and consumer accounts for the Cork-based agency, O'Sullivan PR.
Slattery Communications appoints James Wynne as Director of Sport
James Wynne has been appointed as the new Director of Sport at Slattery Communications. James joined Slattery's in 2005 and has worked in the PR and communications industry for the past 10 years. Slattery Communications' specialist sports division was set up in 1995 by John Redmond, who is reducing his day to day involvement with the division but will continue to manage the communications affairs for a select number of his existing clients.
Former EU Commissioner joins Fleishman-Hillard's international advisory board
Fleishman-Hillard International Communications has announced that David Byrne, former European commissioner for health and consumer protection, former attorney general of Ireland and special envoy to the Geneva-based World Health Organization has been appointed to the firm's international advisory board. A barrister at law, David has also practiced before the Bar of Ireland and the European Court of Justice, and has also served as a member of the International Court of Arbitration in Paris. He is currently Chancellor of Dublin City University.
New faces at Hill & Knowlton
Hill & Knowlton has announced the appointment of Orlaith Finnegan as Account Manager. Orlaith joins H&K's Corporate and Technology Practice with more than four years combined agency and in-house experience. The company has also appointed Margaret Jenkins as Account Executive. Margaret has a degree in marketing from GMIT and a postgraduate PRII Diploma in Public Relations from the Fitzwilliam Institute.
Lisa Dennehy appointed Account Executive at Upfront PR
A graduate of public relations and advertising, Lisa Dennehy has been appointed Account Executive at Kerry's leading PR and event management consultancy, Upfront PR. Since its foundation in 1995, Upfront PR has worked with clients throughout Munster, who operate in many sectors including tourism, travel, hospitality, retailing, technology, fashion, beauty, health, music, art, property and media.

NLA agrees to drop retrospective fees for PRII/PRCA members
The Newspaper Licensing Agency (NLA) manages the rights to all digital copying of UK newspaper titles - all other forms of copying in Ireland being licensed directly by Newspaper Licensing Ireland.
Following jo int PRCA / PRII discussion with NLA, agreement has been reached whereby members of either association who apply for a NLA licence after today and who subscribe by 01 April 2008 will not be asked to pay retrospective fees for periods of past digital copying (NLA are entitled to collect for up to six years of past copying).
Members wishing to arrange licence cover may contact the NLA directly on (0044) 1892 525 273. Please inform the NLA that you are a PRII and/or PRCA member. If you are already in dialogue with the NLA they will honour the offer as outlined above. Inaugural PR Ball - a celebration of PR professionals and friends

Public Relations and Marketing Officer, Ladies Gaelic Football Association Location: Croke Park, Dublin
The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (Association), founded in 1974, has over 115,000 registered members in Ireland. The game is played in countries across the world. Five provincial councils covering Ireland and Britain are responsible for running championships and competitions in their provinces.
To continue its development as one of the largest, fastest growing, active and dynamic sports in Ireland, the Association is looking to fill the position of public relations and marketing officer, based in Croke Park in Dublin.
Reporting to the chief executive you will be responsible for:
- The development and implementation of a public relations strategy covering all major events held by the Association

Job description

This position will take responsibility for the profitable development and growth of the PLATINUM ONE events business in the Irish market through sales management, client relationship management, event execution and product development. In addition to contributing to the overall strategic development plan for event management, you will determine new market and client development opportunities as well as executing exceptional events for key clients, from small events right through to major product launches and conferences.
You will use your ability to conduct business in other European languages to specifically deliver on targets within those geographic areas. You will use your interpersonal skills and seniority to continue to pull together the PLATINUM ONE teams from across their geographic and product areas, and you will work together with your colleagues from different markets and teams. Communications Assistant, Bank of Ireland

Background to role:
The consumer communications team is responsible for developing and implementing all retail consumer communications strategies and programmes and works closely with all retail business divisions to achieve effective and lasting impact in terms of consumer PR. Main responsibilities:

Duties and responsibilities:
- Managing events as per existing calendar of internal events
- Planning and organising new events for the coming year
- Preparation of project timelines, budgets (income and expenditure)
- Provision of weekly report to general manager and chief executive
- Responsible for obtaining all Garda and relevant permits for events
- Ensuring that all fundraising events comply with fundraising guidelines and procedures (audit requirement)
- Securing corporate partnership/ sponsorship for events/ campaigns where appropriate
- Mentoring existing fundraising and events staff
- Liaising with PR and communications manager with regard to PR/media relations on all events.
Required experience:
- Proven extensive experience in all areas of event management, from planning and budget control to sponsorship and the delivery of the final result
- Ability to create a unique event concept and build awareness and support of same
- The ability to think strategically and to learn quickly
- Excellent PR and communications skills
- First rate written and oral presentation skills
- The ability to work under pressure and to deadline
- Excellent people management skills.
