Tuesday Forum: The changing face of print journalism

In an era of 24-hour rolling news broadcasts, internet-based newswire services and SMS messaging to name but a few, the glory days of the newspaper industry would appear to be at an end. Arguably, the battle to remain relevant in terms of conveying dramatic news has been lost.

But newspapers are clawing their way back and circulation figures remain surprisingly high. Perhaps it’s because only the printed word can adequately provide the in-depth analysis often required to accompany a breaking story. Or maybe our modern obsession with lifestyle and entertainment news, to which an increasing number of column inches are devoted, is behind this regeneration. Either way, newspapers still hold their power to inform and to influence.

The changing face of print journalism is the topic for discussion at our next Tuesday Forum, which takes place at Buswells Hotel on 25 October. Led by John O’Sullivan, Chair of the MA in Journalism course at Dublin City University and Nóirín Hegarty, Editor of the Sunday Tribune, the Forum will look at changes in Irish journalistic practices brought about by a combination of new media, the quest for a work/life balance among consumers, increased competition in the newspaper marketplace and cutbacks in staff levels. It will also address the burning question for PR professionals – how to respond to these changes on behalf of employers and clients.

The Forum will begin at 6.30pm and is free of charge to PRII members and students. A fee of €15 applies for non-members. If you plan to attend please e-mail info@prii.ie.
